Let's Go Latin!

There was a time when everybody went Latin...

From psychedelic hipsters...

...to psychedelic hippies;

artists square...

...squarer (I have a suspicion that people named Winterhalter don't naturally go Latin)...

...and almost surreally square (and just why is Walt Disney looking over George's shoulder?);

it was a trend that ignored geography...

...and thousands of years of musical tradition;

it was electrifying...

...and brazen.

And then, just as suddenly as it came, it was gone. When do you suppose was the last time that anyone consciously went Latin?

  1. Does trying on a fishnet body suit a la Oscar de la Hoya count as going Latin?

  2. William Hung went latin, it made him famous.

  3. I know that when they shot Gidget Goes Latin with a very young Charo in the titular role and Senor Cugat as a rather long-in-the-tooth Moondoggie, the studio chose not to release the film and, in fact, shelved the whole franchise.
