Bossa Nova à la Beirut

Here's a pleasant little curiosity that's turning up on Arabic music channels these days. If nothing else, it makes for a pleasant change from the usual video fare, a relentless stream of hyperplasticized one-hit wonders bleating out disco love songs while being romanced by low-rent eighth-generation Omar Sharif knockoffs.

The singer is an until-now unknown thrush called Abir Nehme; the real star, though, is the video itself. The animation is based on lines of Arabic calligraphy, and the song may well sound rather familiar. It's all entirely charming, I think, and an excellent tonic for my recent grumpiness.

Your language lesson for the day: "Behibak", as you might guess from the context, means "I love you."

  1. Miss J cannot comment on the music, as once again some bitch has f'd with the volume on her work computer. But it looks very cool.
