Birthday Boy: The Survivor

Let's raise a glass to Gary Merrill, today's birthday boy as well as the last and perhaps most notable Mr. Bette Davis. He got out of that alive, if barely, and has if nothing else the posthumous satisfaction that he made one film that will likely be seen as long as people are watching movies.

He's seen here with his Lady Fair in what has always sounded to me like one of the ghastliest entertainments ever conceived, The World of Carl Sandburg, an evening of poetry reading and rancor that effectively ended the Davis-Merrill alliance. Don't they look chummy?

  1. He also, according to the gossip-minded Lawrence J. Quirk, indulged in an affair with an as-yet unnamed male senator in between romances with La Davis and La Hayworth.

Which somehow turns us on, but we're funny that way.

  2. Fear not; you're not alone. I don't know if it's the senator part or the between Bette and Rita part, or just the Gary Merrill part (or his parts), but it does make for food for thought....

  3. Let's face it, between Davis and Hayworth he probably wanted to try a relationship where he could be the top.

  4. It was Larry Craig, wasn't it?

  5. Well, there goes that fantasy...
