The Madness of Miss M.

You know, I was going to run the original of this number, from Murder at the Vanities, certainly among the weirder musicals of 1934.

Memory plays tricks, though, and while it is indeed as performed in that film a fab number, the star, Miss Gertrude Michaels, steps on my last nerve (I think I thought it was actually performed by another lead, the divine Kitty Carlisle).

So instead, here's Bette Midler, baby diva of 1971, singing it during her justly celebrated stint at the Continental Baths.

This, it turns out, is a number that just cries out for a broad Borscht Belt accent...
