I find myself helplessly transfixed by Elizabethan portraits of young men - their elegance, their dressiness, their occasional messiness - tumbling curls, stubble, sense that there might be something under the fingernails. It's best when they wear a pearl earring, but, as here, a lace collar will do.
He might have been Robert Devereau, Earl of Essex. Or just some fop, as seen by Nicholas Hilliard. Either way, I'd take him.
