Let's raise a glass to Gary Merrill, today's birthday boy as well as the last and perhaps most notable Mr. Bette Davis. He got out of that alive, if barely, and has if nothing else the posthumous satisfaction that he made one film that will likely be seen as long as people are watching movies. He's seen here with his Lady Fair in what has always sounded to me like one of the ghastliest entertainments ever conceived, The World of Carl Sandburg, an evening of poetry reading and rancor that effectively ended the Davis-Merrill alliance. Don't they look chummy?
