Overheard at the Garden Party
"Oh, no, Virginia - I simply can't believe it!"
"Well, honey, then don't look over your shoulder [which you really shouldn't be showing at your age, thought Virginia, especially in that tacky post-deb teagown. Talk about your mutton dressed as lamb!] or you'll see all the proof you need."
"I simply can't conceive it, though. Bad enough that it happens downtown - but to bring that beezle to the club Spring Fling - I mean, you can't do in Connecticut what you may get away with on Park Avenue! You know that all of Edith Potter's children are here - what will people say? Should I look?"
"They've gone inside - she probably wants another cocktail. Anyway, calm down, Miss Priss. Whether you like it or not, some day we may have to be nice to her. Face facts: Stephen Haines is stepping out on Mary!"

All those frills AND a bow AND a corsage. No wonder she looks so fretful.
ReplyDeleteWell, of course it's also that she's worried about her children - the daughter, always cleaning her little glass animals, and that shiftless son, who seems likely just to run off and leave them...
DeleteShe got it off the rack at Sears.
ReplyDeleteOr the bargain basement at Black's!
