Wiener Schmaltz
What could better summon up the nostalgic elegance of Alte Wien than that rarest of cinematic genres, the Hitchcock operetta? Throw in those mitteleuropische sweethearts, Frauleins Matthew and Compton, and you have a confection that seems likely to be about as authentically and evocatively Viennese as Brighton Pier.
But why, you ask, am I suddenly in Continental Mood?
Well, my dears, it's that time again, meaning that courtesy of the good people at Golden Handcuffs Consulting Amalgamated International, I am once more off to the land of schnitzel and Aperol spritzes for a week of spreading the gospel of strategic communications. It's a testimony to just how thoroughly over this endless winter I am that the thing I'm looking forward to most in one of the most beautiful and historic cities in Europe is the comparatively warm weather.
Well, that and the Aperol spritzes. If you'll wish me safe travels, I'll have one in your honor.

ReplyDeleteEat a schnitzel for me!
ReplyDeleteShould you care to test your theory about its authentic "Danube-y-ness", the whole film is available to download from the Internet Archive site. Alternatively, do a waltz in Vienna itself and imagine you are Jessie Matthews! Auf Wiedersehen! Jx
ReplyDeleteShow them what fabulous is! XOXO
