And Now, a Word from Our [Birthday] Sponsor

It's a two-for-one birthday special today!

Yes, that one-woman Shameless Camp Explosion herself, Miss Shelley Winters, would have been 93 today, and here we see her shilling on behalf of birthday boy Max Factor, Jr., who ably shepherded his father's fabled firm into the second half of the last century.

Factor Senior pioneered the use of pancake makeup by actress and suburban matron alike; his son advanced the field of smudgeproof lipstick, a product that few consumed more enthusiastically than Shelley.

As for The Raging Tide, it was apparently a tidy little noir starring Shelley and Richard Conte.  Anybody seen it?

I don't know about you, but I truly miss Shelley Winters (and her indelible lipstick).  I've saluted her on her birthday before, and any day that she crosses my mind is just that little bit better because of it.  I know I'm kind of a broken record on this front, but how many people will be thinking that of, say, Kristen Stewart in 40 years or so?

  1. This picture makes her look like she has dingy teeth.

    1. Now I can't see anything else.

Even so, that may be the least unflattering thing ever said about poor dear Shirley...

  3. "I think on-stage nudity is disgusting, shameful and damaging to all things American. But if I were 22 with a great body, it would be artistic, tasteful, patriotic and a progressive religious experience."
